If you are interested in learning to knit but are apprehensive about it. I have been knitting consistently for over 30 years and my goal is to have more knitters in the world! I would be honored to be your guide on your knitting adventure!
Think of me as Your Knitting Tudor.
YOU CAN knit! I want you to have a wonderful fiber experience and set you up with knowledge for smooth introduction into the world of knitting!
In the knitting world, there are KALs or Knit A Longs which are groups of people using the same pattern in the same time frame. I am riffing off this and have a step by step system is what I am calling a Learn A Long. You will have me alongside of you with step by step video tutorials and accompanying PDFs and diagrams. This will give you a reference that you can keep handy.
The Digital Course consists of 6 modules which will be released a week apart. This is self paced so go at your speed. You do not have to get everything completed in a week if that doesn’t work for you. You have lifetime access so please don’t stress. But it is important for you to do the knitting for each module before moving on to the next. At first, holding knitting needles and yarn in your hands will feel a bit strange and clumsy. That is alright! Everyone feels that way at first. PRACTICE will be the key. It is going to take a little time for muscle memory to kick in.
In Module 1 Getting Started - we will talk about Why Knit?, Yarn, Needles, Notions and in our Learn A Long you will learn how to Cast on and how to do the Knit Stitch. There are two main ways of holding your yarn and I will demonstrate both so you can choose what works best for you. We will also start the practice project.
In Module 2 Understanding the Stitches - you will be introduced to knitting lingo and start learning how to read your knitting. In the Learn A Long the Purl stitch will be covered and we will talk about how these stitches make different fabric. We will add to the practice project.
Module 3 is all about Adding Interest - This module is all about how we put stitches in different combinations to create a variety of stitch patterns. The Learn A Long is about the rib stitch, seed stitch, how to increase and stitches along with binding off to stop things from unraveling.
With some confidence and practice under your belt, we move into Module 4 which is all about Patterns. We will talk about where to buy them, how to read them and I will share a secret about them. In the Learn A Long you will be introduced to a new way to cast on and we will start the first Pattern, Fingerless Gloves!
Module 5 is all about Knitting in the Round which is knitting a tubular item, like socks, hats, sweaters. In the Learn A Long we will cover 3 ways to knit in the round and start our second pattern, A Hat.
Finally we arrive at Module 6 In the Learn A Long, you will be seeing two different ways to add yarn to a project and how to block or shape a completed project. Also we will have our last pattern which is a Cowl.
We will wrap by with a glimpse into future projects.
You will have a solid foundation of knitting when this course is completed with the confidence to continue and create beautiful things!
The supplies needed for this course are Knitting Needles and Yarn. To start out, we will be using US Size 7 or 8 circular knitting needles and a skein of #4 acrylic yarn in a light color. A light color yarn will be easier for you to see what you are doing. Black or very dark colors are difficult to keep track of stitches, so please keep this in mind when buying the yarn.
Both can be purchased as your local craft store or big box store or on Amazon. Please make sure this first yarn is inexpensive and it is acrylic. This is going to be your practice yarn. It needs to be sturdy and accessible. As we get into the projects using patterns, there will be more yarn options but for now, inexpensive acrylic. There is a Supply List in your downloads that will give you more specific information.
IT IS ONLY YARN! And this is something you are doing for yourself. Remember that there is no timeline for this. The modules will be released weekly but that does not mean that you have to get everything done in that week. Go at Your OWN pace! Everyone learn differently. The most important thing is to keep going. The first half of this course is designed for you to get comfortable moving the stitches from one needle to the other. That is why I want you to use inexpensive acrylic yarn. You will have a solid foundation of knitting when this course is completed. You will have the confidence to continue and create beautiful things!
